Asian Cultural Center

WASHINGTON D.C.

A design of a cultural center in an existing 1960’s era office building includes an exhibition gallery open to the public on the ground floor that is also used for performances, an upper floor for classes and administrative offices and a broadcasting facility for interviews and a professional kitchen for cooking shows in the basement.

The design creates large open spaces for flexible use, enhancing the open floor plan with continuous swatches of white and black offset by an exposed concrete floor tinted a brilliant gold. Recessed spaces and built-in screens filter light to create ethereal local conditions within the overall spacious floor plans. The exterior of the building was retrofitted with new windows with built-in shading devices for sun control.
