ELECTRICAL SUBSTATION
Randall’s Island, NYC
To accommodate the many improvements to the park, a new electrical power substation was needed. The site selected was underneath the Bronx span of the RFK/Triborough Bridge, thereby avoiding occupying parkland.
The building is conceived as an addition to the bridge and takes its design cues from the larger structure, with its linear form, blue metal cladding and angled roof screen. The elevation of the building is banded with a frieze created by a continuous metal louver running along the top.
The project was reviewed and approved by the NYC Public Design Commission.
