GAELIC SPORTS CENTER

RANDALL’S ISLAND PARK, NYC

The Gaelic Sports Center is a regional home for the Irish sports of Gaelic football and hurling and serves as a social locus for the Irish American community. The plan accommodates a stadium, practice rugby field, a community center, open plazas, and parking.

Set between the RFK/Triborough and Hell Gate bridges, the roof of the stadium echoes the repetitive structures of the bridge trestles to generate a compatible physical presence amidst the long bridge structures. Sitting under the flight path of LaGuardia Airport, the distinctive curvilinear roof of the clubhouse is a notable form from the air.

Located on Randall’s Island Park, the privately funded project required approval from the NYC Dept. of Parks and Recreation and the NYC Public Design Commission.
