(MARITIME SOUTHAMPTON MARINA)
An important component of the development project for Maritime Southampton is a new clubhouse for an existing marina. The site for the clubhouse is in a mapped flood area, so the building is designed with piles. In addition, in the event of future flooding a portion of the site has the potential to experience hydrostatic water pressure that could damage a building’s foundations. This site condition informed the building design. Setting the building footprint away from the zone of high-pressure results in graceful, curved form. Within a modern idiom, the roof form and exterior cladding responds to the traditional, local context.
