Penn 1 Plaza

Manhattan, NYC

The plaza at Penn 1 is located immediately north of Penn Station and Madison Square Garden and is the largest open space in the Penn Plaza District. The design for the plaza provides a beer garden, three food kiosks and a public art installation. A large deck with a bosque of trees and perimeter planters creates a central beer garden. Food and beverage kiosks are placed at the western edge of the beer garden with the site-specific art installation at the center of the plaza space. The art is a series of geometric elements that appear as distortions of the plaza deck inspired by traditional Japanese gardens.

The plaza is a privately-owned-public space (POPS) with the design having to satisfy the owner, a private real estate company; a hospitality group, the principal tenant; and the NYC Planning Commission, the regulatory agency with jurisdiction.
